MARCO MARTINS
Born in Lisbon in 1972. His extensive body of work spans various fields, including cinema, visual arts, and theater. Trained at the Lisbon Theater and Film School, the Tisch School of the Arts, and HFF – University of Television and Film in Munich, his films have been showcased at major international film festivals worldwide (Venice, Cannes, Rotterdam, and San Sebastian), and his theater work, with a strong social and community focus, has been presented throughout Europe.
His first feature film, “Alice” (2005), won the Best Film Award at the Cannes Directors' Fortnight in 2005. In 2006, Marco Martins co-directed the short “Um Ano Mais Longo” with Tonino Guerra, selected for the Venice International Film Festival competition. His feature film “São Jorge” (2016) was also in competition at the Venice Film Festival, where actor Nuno Lopes won the Golden Lion for Best Actor. Like “Alice”, “São Jorge” was submitted for Oscar consideration for Best Foreign Film and nominated for the Goya Awards. Following its premiere in the Official Competition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival, Martins's latest feature film, “Great Yarmouth - Provisional Figures”, co-produced by Uma Pedra no Sapato and the British Film Institute, and based on the play “Provisional Figures”, continues to be screened internationally and on the national commercial circuit, having premiered in France in 2024.
